NEBB Certification

If you work in the Testing, Adjusting and Balancing (TAB) and commissioning/retro-commissioning space, or if you’re a facilities manager or building owner/operator, then you’ve likely heard of NEBB (National Environmental Balancing Bureau) and their certification. Since 1971, NEBB has built its reputation as the premier international certification association for firms that deliver high-performance building systems.

Beyond being a reputable name in the industry, NEBB certification provides the assurance of knowledge, quality, and best practices in the contractors you employ. Continue reading to learn more about the benefits of NEBB certification and NEBB-certified professionals.

NEBB certification establishes industry standards

Since the early 1970s, NEBB has established and maintained industry standards, procedures and specifications for work in its various disciplines. Each discipline is anchored by a NEBB Procedural Standard that provides guidelines for work to be performed and NEBB certification examinations that validate the technician’s knowledge.

NEBB certification serves as proof of the abilities of a company and their technicians to provide high-level testing, adjusting, and balancing services. Once certification is earned, NEBB still encourages continuing education for all certified firms and technicians to stay up to date on best practices in the industry. To help with this, NEBB supports educational training programs to help keep those certified up to date and adapt with current commissioning standards and technologies.

NEBB certification defines strict requirements for firms

By successfully becoming NEBB certified, it provides your customers with tangible proof that your firm is qualified in the proper methods and procedures for each NEBB discipline, and that your technicians have the correct calibrated equipment to provide accurate reports. The NEBB certification process requires much training, networking, work experience, and asset collection before taking the examination, requiring a major time commitment outside of the work environment.

Just a few of the requirements for firms to qualify for TAB certification include:

  • A minimum of 12 months as a contractor engaged in TAB work
  • Affiliation with a local NEBB chapter
  • Six letters of endorsement from former partners
  • Possession of a variety of TAB instruments
  • A demonstrated ability to work within the NEBB Procedural Standards for Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing of Environmental Systems
